We Have the Fossils. We Win.

Evolution. We have the fossils. We win.

(Click the image to embiggen.)

For some peculiar and unknown reason, the original version of the above poster has almost completely disappeared from the internet. I have a small, low-rez copy in an earlier article. I’ve only found one other copy anywhere on the internet, and it’s just a copy of mine (they kept my unique file name for it). I got it originally from Fundies Say the Darndest Things, but it seems to have disappeared even from there.

I’ve always liked this poster. The evidence for evolution goes way beyond the fossils, but this poster summarizes the fossil evidence quite well. One of the things creationists are always claiming is that there are “no transitional fossils!” Well you’re staring right at one!

I also like this poster, because it has been officially denounced by Kevin Wirth, minister of propaganda for Access Research Network. Anything that pisses off a creationist is gold in my book!

We need to get this thing back into circulation, with a better, bigger version. I found a big, clean copy of the tiktaalik photo and made us a new version over at MotiFake, which is what I’ve posted at the top. If you have a blog, please consider posting this (but please host the image on your site). If we can get enough members of this species onto the internet, it will reestablish itself as a self-sustaining population.

(Also, could everyone please go over to MotiFake and vote for this with a high rating? In its first hour, it received several low votes from the ignorant. I’d like it to have a higher rating, so it appears more credible to the folks who haven’t yet decided whether they believe in reality or fairy stories.) [It’s gone! See below.]

Evolution wins!

UPDATE: 2/17/09 @ 9:30 AM

We are currently the top-rated poster at MotiFake! Thank you for your vote. If you haven’t given this poster a high rating (preferably 5) yet, please do so.

We won’t keep this position for long, and that’s OK. There’s no reason for a sustained campaign to do so. I just want this thing to have enough high votes that its rating won’t be too severely damaged when creationists find it and only give it a 1.

UPDATE: 2/21/09 @ 12:29 AM

The poster has been deleted from MotiFake!!!

Does anybody have any idea what happened? Is the site run by creationists? Other evolution posters are still around. This is really strange.

    I love what you wrote:

This is Tiktaalik. He is an example of a true Transitional Fossil. He has both fishy and lizardy parts. I really don’t know what more fundies want.

  3. Danny Says:

    I’ll post it too.

I got Your Inner Fish by Neil Shubin (the guy who discovered this fossil) for my birthday last week. Looking forward to reading it.

For your listening pleasure, the Tiktaalik song.

I don’t have a blog, but I’ll put this up as my facebook profile pic. It’s so apparent and simple I can’t imagine how much inner strength it takes for fundies to live in complete and total denial.

  7. cognitive dissident Says:

I’ve posted it as well…it makes me chuckle.

I haven’t got an explanation as to why it vanished, alas. That’s just bizarre. Interesting how your link’s been replaced by a bomb shop.

If they think they can defeat you, they’ve got another think coming. I’ll have this up on my blog with a request to spread far and wide come Sunday morning. Perhaps we’ll start a petition to PZ. Prepare to take over the intertoobz!

    It be up.

That has to be one of the least offensive posters at motifake. Why the hell was it deleted?? Maybe we need to go on a motifake submission rampage. Can they delete them all? lol

Lulz at fishy and lizzard parts. Explain the platypus, it makes both creationists and darwinist look like idiots. the same thing with the Balaeniceps rex. or perhaps especially with Balaeniceps rex. That thing makes no goddamn sense, not as a design, not as an accident, nothing, it just…it makes no sense.

/deattached from the debate, I am totally indifferent. either way makes zero no difference to how my life turns out, believe it or not.

I couldn’t begin to fathom what a “darwinist” would think of a platypus. I’ve never met either (platypus or darwinist).

Modern evolutionary biology has no problems with the platypus at all. We have it very well categorized as a matter of fact. You should look it up some time. Knowledge is superior to ignorance. You’re welcome to join us on the superior side of the fence. All it takes is a little curiosity and the willingness to follow it.

Having never heard of “Balaeniceps rex” and curious as to what it was, I turned to the Mighty Wikipedia for the answer.

It turns out, it’s a bird. And not even really that unusual of a bird. I mean, it’s not flightless. It’s not ginormous or teensy weensy. It’s just a slightly different looking version of the average bird in the stork family. Big whoop.

How does that prove anything?! It’s taxonomically easier to classify than the platypus was way back when it was discovered.

I’m a hard core motifaker and a simple motifake search turns up the poster right here.

It’s highly rated. It was not deleted, it just got voted off the first top page. You didn’t look hard enough.

The site is certainly not run by creationists, there are lots of motifakes bashing religion there.
