Atom – Good luck with your music career (seriously). I’ve been doing music for some time and have yet to make any appreciable amount of money (not even close enough to quitting my day job). I may not be a fan of your music, but I can appreciate the work you went through to produce it, so… good luck!

Okay, so seriously… How does G-d show respect? I’m serious. I have never seen that before and I’m honestly curious.

I am sorry if I made ARN look bad with my theological content, but I am a Christian, so most of my songs are theological in some way. You apparently can’t see that I’m simply a Christian MC who mentions ID in a track, rather than “ID = G-dtalk/Theology if the two are ever seen together in a person’s rap song.”

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen Atheism and Darwinism mentioned together in the same book, so….nah, I have better critical thinking skills than to jump to that conclusion.

Also, G-d = God, it isn’t for mystical Rumpelstiltskin reasons, just a sign of respect and identification.

That was a very weak Elmo video you sent us to. It does not show off his true range as a performer. People might form a low opinion of him. This performance is far more moving:

One of my co-workers at a former job had a son in a Jewish high school. I helped him with a couple of his papers and he always used G-d. I seem to recall that this was a requirement of the school.

Again, I think it’s a manifestation of Judeophilia. Orthodox Jews spell it that way. The fundies have, in recent years, become enamored of all things Jewish (e.g., John Hagee). Of course, they still believe the Jews are going to hell.

I remember taking Anthropology 102 in college with a professor who was an expert on the Yanomamo tribe of the Amazon. They held similar beliefs in regards to a person’s name.

However, I still like to think that Atom was calling God a “G”.

I’d imagine Ron’s first suggestion is true. “G-d” is so that when anyone searches the site, the word “God” won’t be found, hence lending credence to their whole “ID isn’t religion” schtick. Creationists are so damn under-handed.

Did you listen to the actual song? No. I can’t stand rap. I’m leaving it to others to determine how it compares to other rap.

I was somewhat into a lot of the 90s hip hop artists. You know, the ones that all like got shot (wtf?). Somehow Snoop survived that. My guess is that he was too loaded on weed to get upset enough to get into gunfights, but I have no evidence for this... Anyway, performance-wise, on a scale ranging from Denny Blaze to Tupac, I give him a rating of Elmo. As for the whole "G-d" thing, it really makes no sense. In the audio he clearly says "god" not "g.d." or any other phonetic variation.

I'm guessing the reason is because among some Christians, you aren't allowed to call God by name. That's why some Bibles don't use the name. He's always called "The Lord". I think the real reason they aren't allowed to call him by name is because that would give them power over him. In some mythologies, knowing somebody's true name gives you control over him. That's the basis behind the Rumpelstiltskin story. In fact, I just found this fun tidbit on Wikipedia:

The ancient Jews considered their God's true name so potent that they believed its invocation conferred upon the speaker tremendous power over His creations. In order to prevent abuse of this power, as well as in to avert blasphemy, the name of God was always taboo, and so increasingly disused so that by the time of Christ their High Priest was supposedly the only individual who spoke it aloud - and then only in the Holy of Holies upon the Day of Atonement.

God. What sort of pathetic "omnipotent" being is that? He can be collared and led around on a leash, if only you know his name. Heel, boy! Good doG!
