MichaelS:

I agree with you completely. The way it should work is that if the father wants an abortion and the mother doesn't, then the father is absolved of all further financial obligation (and also paternal rights).

My problem lies in the unfair treatment of the issue. If a man gets a woman pregnant and wants to terminate it, but she keeps it anyways, he's expected to pay 18 years of child support even though he didn't want it. If, on the other hand, he wants to keep it and she doesn't, she can kill it and he has no say in the matter.

So they can make us deal with 18 years of pain, but we can't make them deal with 9 months of pain. Just doesn't seem very fair to me.

Rystefn:

You are correct that the father has rights. However, since the woman has to carry the baby for nine months, I think her rights should dominate. Nobody should be forced to carry an unwanted pregnancy.

You leave out the same right almost everyone discussing abortion leaves out - the rights of a father. When the Hell does a father get to say "I'd like a chance to raise my offspring"? Sooner or later that cluster of cells isn't just part of a woman's body, and I think that's right about the point when the sperm from the father fertilizes the egg. I'd like a little bit of say in the matter.

When I see how my friends' kids turned out, I think abortion should be legal up until the 25th year.

Thank you! I couldn't have put it better myself! Unfortunately, we can't have an honest, civil debate because the fundies won't let go of this "soul" thing, without which, they lose their grounds to protest first-trimester abortions.

I should just post a link to this from my blog; you'll get my resident fundies commenting over here. They HATE abortion posts!
