I’m Cohabitating with Fundies!

Sharing a home

(Image from USA Today)

Sometimes life gives you big joys. Sometimes life gives you little joys. Fundies, however, seldom give me any joy. Today, life (and some southern California fundies) decided to give me a little joy.

I was rather vainly (as in the seven deadly sin type, not the futile type) doing a Google search of incoming links, when I found a site called Site Dossier. It tells you some basic facts about whatever web site you enter. Here’s their page for BoF. Not terribly interesting for anybody but me. It shows I have 68 incoming links. Not bad, but I wish it were higher.

I’m paying 1&1 Internet for space on a shared server. I’ve never known who I was sharing my bed with, as it were. Site Dossier tells me! Check this out:

My roommates

They’re all small sites, and none is terribly interesting (except for numbers 1 and 11, of course; those sites are fantastic!). But check out number 19. If you go there, this is what you’ll see:

My mate!

That’s right! A church! And not just any church, but (apparently) a fundie church! I’m on their server! I’m contaminating their well! I’m peeing in their pool!

OK. So I’m easily amused.

My roommate keeps telling people that we “co-habitate,” and she takes a special joy in saying it to people that she knows won’t understand the word.

  2. Parrotlover77 Says:

That is awesome as hell (pun intended). If only there was some way to somehow get the pee from our side of the pool to find its way into their side.

  3. RevRight Says:

Actually, I found this site through what you dismiss as a “fundie church site.” And it didn’t take me long to see that something was amiss here, lacking as your site is in references to the Bible, the Rapture, and such. We’re not as dumb as you think! (Not by a long shot.)

    Blessings!
    Rev. Stan Right

  4. Evolving Skeptic Says:

Just went to Rev Right’s website and my brain is still reeling. How anyone can believe and post this bullshit is beyond my comprehension. In his bio he admits that during his ministries at various Baptist congregations, after about 2 years they kicked his ass out because of his wing-nut teachings.

Is he for real, or is this some satirical website? If he’s for real, I can understand why no church wants him and why he and his “precious” Velma had to form their own ministry in order to preach his whacko beliefs. If it’s satire, great job.

    Evolving:

I’m pretty sure it’s satire. Very subtle and well played. He could seal the deal by calling himself Rev. Poe.

  6. Fundi-lusional Says:

POE****POE is obvious in our friend, Rev Right. Just look at his page on evolution! This guy is hilarious!

  7. Evolving Skeptic Says:

    Ron,

I have a feeling that you’re right. But some of these wing-nuts are so loony that it’s hard to tell the difference between their bullshit and satire. This guy should get a job writing for SNL.

  8. RevRight Says:

My friends, your debate has given me pause. Reading my own blog with fresh eyes, I can almost see how you might think I’m some wiseacre Californian who is pissed off about Prop 8 and trying to vent his spleen by skewering right-wing Christians. Forgive me for creating such a ghastly impression.

  9. Barbara Says:

It’s making me nutsy….I’m almost positive it’s satire and then something strikes me as legitimately fundie….and then I’m back to satire again.

    Kudos, RevRight.

  10. Warth Publishing Inc Says:

Rather than bore you with my long fight with 1and1 just ask yourself why their phone is answered by a recording that tells you what to do if you have been contacted by NCO, a collection agency. If they are above board why do they have to send so many accounts to a collection agency? Also Investigative journalist, Kelli Jack, has written 30 articles about this company and has a suit pending against them. Kelli alleges that 1and1 stole her domain name and sold it. Kelli states: “1and1 should be shut down.”

And finally, the Pennsylvania Better Business Bureau and the Washington DC Better Business Bureau has them listed as “Unsatisfactory” Read comments on the BBB why. Read some customer comments on Red Flag.

I have not paid 1and1 for what I consider fraudulent charges. They have locked my account so I have no access to it. However, they keep renewing domains that I don’t want renewed. What respectable organization would do this?

  11. Ron Britton Says:

Thanks for the warning. That does sound sleazy. I have not had any problems. Fortunately, I have the domain registered with GoDaddy (fundie unapproved!). I’ll check up on 1&1. If what you say is true, I’ll look for another host.

  12. Parrotlover77 Says:

I’ve had pretty good luck with vpsland.com, but I have never done a BBB search. Maybe I should… Their support is not the best, but the price is so cheap, it more than makes up for it — especially since my server has had very very few actual problems. But if you have a problem, expect several hours to go by after first contact before it gets resolved. But hey… For $30/mo for a full (virtual) server with admin logon, who am I to complain? I guess I’m just used to “enterprise” service. My work co-lo calls us within minutes if even the slightest tiny thing goes wrong. But when you pay like $6000/mo, I guess that’s the extra service you get. :-)

If I didn’t have such a great relationship with my current domain registrar (neither fundie approved nor disapproved), I’d go to godaddy in a second, just because it pisses off fundies. ;-)

I wish there was a way to see who I was cohabitating with, but since every VPS has their own unique IP, it’s not easy. I could do a reverse lookup on the class C, assuming vpsland owns their entire class C, but I still wouldn’t know who is on my server. Shame. I’m so curious now! Maybe it’s my little tech/music site and a sea of churches? Who knows?! ;-)

  13. J.R. "Bob" Dobbs Says:

RevRight is a Poe, I’ve seen him comment at Pharyngula.

  14. LadyRavana Says:

I’m confused, what is a Poe?

I went to the website, and I honestly couldn’t tell if it was real or a parody. It certainly LOOKS real, but I didn’t see anything that would indicate it was satire, so I was inclined to believe it was serious and that RevRight is just another fundie nutball.

  15. Kate Says:

    LadyRavana,

From what I understand (Wiki’s entry keeps getting deleted) Poe’s argument is that it is difficult to tell fundies and those who satirize them apart. No matter how bizarre the parody, some fundie would probably say it too.

  16. Fundi-lusional Says:

I think RevRight is satire. Look at his argument areas regarding the bible, apologetics, etc., as well as some of his replies to people who comment on his blog. The beauty is that he is very subtle, but I think he is satirical.

  17. Jeremy White Says:

Definitely looks like satire. The over-the-top goat banner was my first clue.

  18. Andrew N.P. Says:

    Here’s a full article on Poe: http://rationalwiki.com/wiki/Poe‘s_Law

And judging by Rev. Right’s comments section, the law is in full effect. A couple of fundies seem to be taking the man at his word. Is this another consequence of that right wing authoritarian mindset? “This guy is saying what I say. What I say is the truth. Therefore, this guy must be honest.” Or something like that.

  19. LadyRavana Says:

Well, what made me think it was real was that I saw a rather repulsive comment from a fundie singing the praises of the passing of Proposition 8.

But if it is satire, I am impressed. Well played, RevRight. Well played.

  20. RevRight Says:

Jeremy, I’m glad you enjoyed the goat banner. My better half Velma took precious time away from our puppet ministry to make that.
