Only Republicans would try to politicise a national hero’s name like that. I don’t know about Dr. King, but Coretta Scott King was a Democrat.

But wasn’t that back in the day when the Republicans were all about civil rights (I mean their own party basically came about because of it)

The values of the current Republican party and that of the party 40 years ago are quite different. Some of these guys today make Goldwater look like a rational human being.

The google tells me that although MLK Sr. was a registered Republican, MLK Jr.’s political affiliation does not seem well known. Some claim he was a Republican, others a Democrat, others admit they have no idea. The King family’s official position is that he wasn’t a Republican, but they are also silent on him being a Democrat. They made that statement in response to the above billboards, in fact.
