I generally don’t like internet slang, but there is no better word to describe this American Vision video that totally decimates atheism!

This is Ferdinand. He’s a man of God. He loves God very much. That’s why he started the Spanish Inquisition.
This is Torquemada. He tortures people too. He’s one of Ferdinand’s friends. He uses words like “heretic”, “confess”, and “repent”. Torq is a nice guy and cares about your immortal soul.
This is Teresa. She’s a nice lady. So nice, in fact, that she won’t give you the pain medication that you need to ease your intolerable pain as you lay dying of a terminal disease. In fact, she’ll give you these words of encouragement to lift your spirits: “You are suffering like Christ on the cross. So Jesus must be kissing you.”

Wow, that was the greatest argument against atheism possible. This video even converted me!
August 17th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
Christians like those that made that video scare the shit out of me, because they truly believe that if they didn’t have Christ in their life, that they would commit atrocities like those in their video. It’s like Christianity is the only thing holding them back. What a bunch of psychopaths they must be.
August 17th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
*Yawn*
Yes it was so convincing. Gee christians have never done a single bad thing in history!
I think we need to add people like David Koresh and Jim Jones. Not only are some christians bat shit crazy but they are allowed to get away with their crazy schemes for extended periods of time by hiding behind the first amendment.
Love the gently patronizing narrator too.

Okay, watched the video and at first I was prepared to think, “Someone’s emulating The Onion. Then I went to the “site of origin,” so to speak.
All puns intended: Oh. My. God.
August 17th, 2008 at 6:50 pm
You do realize that the situation has gotten to the point where the Onion occasionally prints main-line news stories? They did that when Arnold was elected to be governer of California.

Sarah:
No. I started to look at related videos, but I got distracted by some singing cats. Thanks for finding that!
August 17th, 2008 at 8:16 pm
^^ I actually tried sending you that video series a while back…have no clue what happened though. Might have just been my email.
Singing cats are VERY distracting.
August 17th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
Oh, crap! You did send it to me! I just went through my old email, and there it is! I must have planned to look at those links later and then forgot. Sorry about that, Chief!

Another strawman successfully cut down to size by religious zealots! They are SO good at that!
I don’t know if they are just fooling themselves or they really believe it, but if the latter, I’m glad religion exists to hold back those who cannot make moral decisions on their own. Extrapolating back in time, it makes you wonder if the person who made up all these myths (at least the moral component) didn’t believe it, but knew it was the only way to make his moronic fellow humans not cut each other into pieces for no reason.
Not that it’s worked all that well (as per Ron and Sarah’s examples).
As an aside, that great lady Teresa harbored massive amounts of doubt about her benevolent creator, but the Catholic church has, shall we say, swept all that under the rug. Ohhhhh what she REALLY meant was something entirely different from what she actually wrote! Silly me. Thanks for clearing that up, Catholic Church. They always know what people REALLY meant, despite what they actually said.

Wow, I don’t know what to do now. Here I am an atheist for most of my 73 years, and this video comes along. What to do, what to do? I could go to church, but which one? They all interpret the bible in different ways. I could pray, but we know that doesn’t work; the amputees still are without their limbs, tsunamis and thunderstorms, hurricanes still happen. Cancer and heart disease are still rampant. Jesus didn’t come back like said he would.
I could become a muslim and really have some fun and end up with 72 virgins after I die. Will my poor wife end up with half as many virgin men when she dies? (women are only half as important as men) What about my little Shihtzu puppy, what will happen to her?
I know, I will just consider this video to be utter bullshit and continue on with my miserable life.

YouTube tells me “This video is not available in your country.” I happen to be in Germany… After reading the comments, I really feel like I am missing out. Can someone give me a quick rundown of the main points?

Allanimal: The first video basically says that since atheists like Richard Dawkins want their voices heard despite theist majority ruling over the modern world, they are liken to such men like Pierre in the French Revolution. All of this is relayed in a vair annoying and condescending tone that makes you want to literally strangle whomever was the voiceover for the video.
Pierre of course, is a THEIST, but that’s not important…he killed a lot of people and atheists are obviously just murdering scumbags because they lack faith in God (Christian God mind you)
The second video debunks those stupid claims and then throws the argument back in their face with all the atrocities committed in the name of God, etc, etc

Not to be an ass, but it is Robspierre.
The video also fails to mention how France was veritably a theocracy with the Catholic church having heavy influence over the throne. While the peasants starved the church had vast estates and the higher level clergy was extremely wealthy…they lived not unlike the aristocracy. The peasants wisened up and realized that the king and the church really didn’t care about them and used religion as a subjugation tool.
In reality the Church brought it upon themselves. By subjugating their flock, starving them and keeping them generally ignorant they created the conditions for a revolution. What Robspierre and other Reign of Terror leaders did was not good of course, but neither was the centuries of subjugation of the people by the Roman Catholic clergy.

My bad, I start World History in two weeks ^^; (Goes into the FAIL corner)
August 19th, 2008 at 9:49 am
Oh no worries…I didn’t want to sound condenscending. I took 3 semesters worth of classes that studied the French Revolution in depth (The History of the Enlightenment, Modern European History, The French Revolution) as well as various classes that dealt with aspects (Modern European Art, various philosophy classes). I’ve just had this all pounded into me.
Anyways, those Frenchie names shur sound fun-nie :-p

Thanks! Wonder why they decided to block it out of the USA?
The 2nd video plays just fine…

There’s a brief picture of Hitler. Germany prohibits depictions “glorifying Naziism”.
August 19th, 2008 at 10:41 am
That woman narrating the “evil atheist” video sounds like she’s teaching a Sunday-school class to either really slow preschoolers or cataclysmically retarded adults. Given the general level of intellectual sophistication of fundies, I’m going with the latter.
August 21st, 2008 at 8:14 pm
LOL SueBlue!
Well…it kind of defeats their purpose of “skaring us into convershun of the One true way!” (Man, that was painful to type.)
…Seriously? This is the best they can do? Talk to us very, very slowly so that they can be sure we understand that we need to follow Jesus, and all athiests are teh ebil?
Pffffft. Worst Fundie campaign ad EVER.
August 22nd, 2008 at 5:46 am
On the one hand, I would say that such an example of human stupidity is only intended for like-minded people. Perhaps the fundie buffoons that put this together never seriously expected it to convert any atheists. It’s really intended, I think, for those who might not have fully given themselves to the dark side yet, or those who might be thinking of straying off the reservation.
But, on the other hand, these are fundies we are talking about, and it seems that whenever I say something like that, they exhibit a remarkable ability to over-perform in matters of credulity and gullibility. Its worth remembering that these idiots really do believe the crap they say they believe, and, furthermore, they really do expect their fantasies to seem credible and reasonable to non-christians, as if atheists have no idea what message christianity revolves around.
Sorry, christians. I do know what the message is, and its fucking stupid. Take your primitive bullshit and get out of my century.
August 22nd, 2008 at 10:34 am
It’s hard to know whether the mind-numbingly vapid tone of the video was meant to steer the ignorant but wavering fundy back onto the straight and narrow, or was a pathetic attempt at mockery of “them smarty-pants atheists”. My experience of fundies is that they generally lack a sense of humor (at least an intentional one, anyway) and cannot comprehend irony. Like you, LadyR and Brian, I have come to the conclusion that it’s just sheer stoopidity intended for other proud yet defensive stoopids.

Hear, hear. I second that motion.
August 22nd, 2008 at 12:39 pm
As a side note, the comedian Eddie Izzard made an interesting observation about some of the vilest men in history. Hitler was a painter, Pol Pot was a history teacher…Stalin was a former seminarian. It seems like the real evil comes from the places you least expect.

Ah. A ferociously stupid video shot down succinctly. I love it.
