So what if the abortion and environmental movements really were linked to population control? Everyone with a brain knows there’s waaay too many damn humans because we seem to think we have some inalienable right to pop out kid after kid after kid. Just because we want to. I won’t go into the consequences of it here. You can find that on my blog.

The population needs to be controlled. It’s not a pleasant truth, but a truth nonetheless.

Good point about the inseperability of planet and people. These rabid fundies never seem to follow their “logic” to its conclusion. They rave on about how us tree-huggin’ humanists are elevating the importance of ecosystem above that of humans. They never pause to consider that a healthy ecosystem is the only thing that can keep humans alive. They don’t seem to realize that the earth is a finite, closed system with finite resources - and that we’re not even close to being able to go anywhere else. Of course, they believe that God or the Baby Jesus or whatever is going to bail them out in the end, after they finish happily trashing the really nice home they believe their sky Daddy gave them.

If I was God, I’d say “Too damn bad! You fucked it up, don’t come crying to me!”

But that’s why God created Monsanto — genetically modified food = more food. What? Is it safe, you ask? Will it displace natural, well-understood plants and disturb the food chain in unpredictable and possibly dangerous ways? Will it be poisonous to wild animals or humans or even “pre-born” fetuses?

Stop thinking! All you need is FAITH! Faith and also velveeta for the Duggar kids.

I think they are afraid. I think they know in their hearts, that reason is correct and it will displace mythology if allowed to prosper.

Had another thought about Tony Perkins and the population problem. Do you think he reads the news and noticed that food shortages are affecting even affluent nations?

Ark - Good point on the funding thing. Few hundred bil is extremely low on the total probable cost. I think we’ve far exceeded that already. I think we’re at least to half a tril. I believe the estimate of total cost will be 3 tril when all is said and done. A lot of “bills” haven’t come in yet…

Can you imagine if we took like half of the 3 tril that Iraq will cost and set some sort of 10 year goal for Martian colonization a la Kennedy and the moon mission? Holy crap. We’d be able to do it with that kind of money. As it stands, it’s taking some 40-50 years just to get BACK to the moon with the funding NASA gets. Damn shame.

The biggest thing he seems not to understand is that the planet and the people are inseparable. The earth isn’t like a house where, if you have more kids, you can move to a bigger one. This is the only place we’ve got. (PL: I’d love to have lunar and Martain colonies, but people seem to think that a few hundred million for space exploration is more of a waste than a few hundred BILLION for the conflict in Iraq)

It’s also another one of those things where Xtians pick and choose from new and old testaments; ‘be fruitful and multiply’ was old testament.

First, that picture is awesome!

Second, what is so bad about having less babies? I mean let’s take out the abortion issue here for a second. Even if abortion was illegal, he’d be bitching that people aren’t having more kids, because women want careers or some other scapegoat. The real problem here, for ol’ Tony and fundies like him, is that they are very worried about the WHITE population, NOT the population in general. Us whities are not doing our part to make new whities! That’s the real problem for him. It’s racism whitewashed (har har) with other fundie issues to get people motivated to squirt out more kids!

How can anybody seriously worry that the human population would “only” be one billion strong? I don’t have hard numbers in front of me, but I read a study once where the genetic diversity of humans was analyzed and compared to the genetic diversity of other species. What was found is that in most (all?) other cases than human, the genetic diversity grows as total population grows. Humans, however, were only as genetically diverse as other animals would be at a population of a few million. Interesting food for thought when considering how rapidly our population has grown only very recently.

Personally, I’d like to see the human population grow (if you’ve seen my previous posts on overpopulation, you are doing a double take right now). HOWEVER, I do not want to see the population grow on Earth. When space colonization becomes possible (either on other planets, moons, or artificial satellites), I want to see the population explode. Why not? We’ll have room. Right now, we don’t. We’ll additionally be able to artificially inflate populations of other animals too. I mean do you think we’ll colonize Mars without bringing pets or livestock along?
