Sit down against Christian fascists

Bill Johnson, the American Decency Ass., is normally concerned with how much plastic the mannequin at the local Victoria’s Secret is showing. Apparently that doesn’t occupy all of his time. He also has time to watch Faux News and listen to talk radio. He then runs out to the mall (shielding his eyes as he runs past Victoria’s Secret and Abercrombie and Fitch) to buy the books his mind masters have programmed him to buy. If he gets hungry, he may stop at the food court to buy some Chick-fil-A.

Apparently this happened again recently. Like a proud third grader, he is very eager to tell us about these books he has just finished reading all by himself.

His “book report” is titled “Food for Thought Regarding Islam and Islamofascism”. The first thing he gets wrong is the term “Islamofascism”, which is, at best, overly simplistic and propagandistic. Ironically, though, you could easily make the case that Christofascism fairly accurately describes the goals of BJ and his ilk.

Here are the core tenets of fascism (I’ve crossed out the ones that clearly don’t apply):

  • Nationalism
  • Authoritarianism
  • Single party state
  • Dictatorship
  • Social Darwinism
  • Social interventionism
  • Indoctrination
  • Propaganda
  • Anti-intellectualism
  • Eugenics
  • Heroism
  • Militarism
  • Economic interventionism
  • Anti-communism

Feel free to dispute in the comments my inclusion or exclusion of any of these items.

It seems ironic that I’ve included Social Darwinism, because fundies claim loudly that they’re agin it and liberals and scientists are fer it. However, the fundies’ vehement opposition to health care reform is ample proof of where they stand on that issue.

(BTW, the radical Islamic movement definitely contains some of the characteristics on that list. It just doesn’t have as many as radical Christianity.)

When I was reading BJ’s latest rant, I couldn’t help but mentally substitute “Christofascism” every time I saw “Islamofascism”. Here are excerpts from his article. I have struck out BJ’s original words and placed the corrected words in brackets.

We have been watching with great concern the onslaught of Islamofascism [Christofascism] throughout the world with its spread into [throughout] Great Britain and France [the United States]. Our awareness now is that there is a great push by this godless [“godly”] force to incorporate their “religion” into America and to erode and depose our Constitution thereby replacing it with sharia [Biblical] law.

Laughable? Radical? Hardly. It’s way past time for Christians [secularists and theists who value the First Amendment] to quit hiding their heads in the sand and begin to be attentive to this world-wide movement with major tentacles throughout the world.

Thankfully there are strong voices emerging who are speaking with knowledge and expertise and with righteous indignation against not only terrorism [Christian extremism], but Islam [radical Christianity].

McCarthy is [Americans United for the Separation of Church and State, The Freedom From Religion Foundation, and People for the American Way are] highly regarded and one [some] of the great resources for understanding the underbelly of the Islamic [fundie] movement; exposing the politically correct condition of America’s media and the danger of bowing and bending to terrorism [Christian extremism] because so many are more concerned about “tolerance” than they are about the reality of the frontal attack upon Americans and our freedoms.

What impact would replacing our Constitution with Sharia [Biblical] Law have upon Christianity [America]? If you don’t know the answer, you really need to.

Sadly, most spiritual leaders [Americans] don’t have a clue as to the threat that Islam [fundamentalist Christianity] poses to America.

If your Christian faith is [Constitutional freedoms are] important to you, you need to understand the times in order to know what to do. Islam [Fundamentalist Christianity] is another threat to America. Of that, I have no doubt.

Well said, BJ!

I think you have to include Eugenics. While it is true that fundies loudly proclaim that homosexuality is just a choice, I have absolutely no doubt that were there to be found something comparable to a simple “gay gene” that they would whole-heartedly seek to prevent propogation of that gene, even if that means supporting abortion. Google “gay eugenics” for a nice selections of articles on that subject.

I find it amusing how Christofacists loudly proclaim just how powerful and grand their deity is, yet it seems that he can be defeated really pretty easily by false gods and ideas. A “real” god that can be destroyed by one that doesn’t exist? Weak.

I’m on the internet too much. The “major tentacles” line in conjunction with this guy made me smile.

I would also include Eugenics with Fundy Xianity. While it’s neither universal nor overt, there is certainly a racist element to that movement.

  4. Lindsay Says:

Good point Thomas. Would breeding until a woman’s uterus falls out be a form of Eugenics just by overwhelming the current population with mini mindless fundies because they can’t force the non-theists to not procreate? Eugenics probably isn’t the exact word for it but I think the sentiment is there.

By all means, include eugenics. If engineering social conditions that essentially squeeze out non-whites, gays, etc., is not eugenics, then I don’t know what is. And the christofascist stance on immigration, gay rights, universal health care, social security, unemployment benefits, and just about any program meant to help the less fortunate or differently-abled, or which affords basic human rights to certain groups, is most certainly aimed at squeezing these groups out of existence.

sue blue – on that topic… these guys are absolutely beyond parody.
