Brian:

I wish I could take credit for the video. All I did was find it. Be sure to visit <a href="http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=cdk007" target="_blank" title="Go to CDK007's YouTube page. Opens in new window." rel="nofollow">CDK007's YouTube page</a>. Almost all of his videos are good.

What you describe is exactly why I do this site. I have no delusions about convincing a creationist to abandon his just-so story and accept the scientific explanation. I'm after the millions who are unsure. Maybe their science education wasn't so good, or maybe some of the plausible-sounding arguments from the Discovery Institute have sowed some doubt. If they come here and I can show them how the creationist stories have no factual basis, maybe they will start to understand how science really works and that we really do know all of the things that we say we know.

BTW, growing up a Methodist, we weren't pushed the literal creation myth growing up, so that's why I accepted evolution even when I didn't understand it. It's so sad that W is giving Methodists such a bad name (him being one). Very few are "fundie." My parents are completely rational people that believe the earth is, indeed, billions of years old, and dinosaurs didn't walk around with cavemen, the flood didn't create the grand canyon, etc.

Brian - I agree 100%. When I was in middle school and was first really explained evolution (as opposed to "it just is"), it didn't make sense to me because no example was so clear. It wasn't until high school that finally I understood that there's no intelligence driving the changes. You see, before then, I couldn't get my head wrapped around the whole "but who decides what changes should happen next" question. Seems silly now, but it just didn't click for me. A video like this would have immediately made the lightbulb in my head turn-on. You are right, it's the education system that's the problem. At least I was open minded enough to not disregard the theory outright simply because I didn't understand it (even though I was very religious back then).

This is absolutely an outstanding, if not perhaps overly simplified, presentation of the basics of evolution. And I will say with some pride that I have since forwarded it to a friend of mine who has been decidedly on the fence regarding ID / creationism vs. evolution. The result? This friend made the following comment to me: "You know, Brian… I've never ever seen evolution explained to me in such a way before. And having seen this video and watched it 3 or 4 times, all I can say is… it seems so obvious to me now."

Wow… hence the power of knowledge! THAT is exactly why this site and others like it is SO VERY IMPORTANT. Most of the problem is that so many people just don't understand the basic principles behind evolution. We are SO far behind with basic education in this country that most people I ask about evolution respond with "Oh, yeah… that's the Darwin thing… he said we came from monkeys". And that's the amount of thought that goes into it. And most of them will simply not buy the concept based on that simplistic and crass an observation. It's on some level repugnant to them.

But SHOW them this… and then you can actually get them to understand how evolution works… and as my friend stated… it seems so obvious! Keep up the good work, Ron!

ParrotLover:

I agree that the different shades of gray were hard to discern. That's probably why the creationists can't understand it. Everything to them is black and white!

Brian:

I deleted Mr. Parsons' comment for violating my spam policy. He left that same message here a couple of weeks ago, and also at many other blogs. Most spam is coherent. I'll give him credit for being different.

Wrong, ParrotLover! The Mooninites are the super aliens.

You and your third dimension!

I hope you can see this, because I'm doing it as hard as I can!

Mr. Parsons,

I'd like to muster up some kind of snarky response to whatever the hell you were talking about, but I'm afraid you were far to bizarre to be worth any more of my time.

Forgot to mention that ATHF is SO the super-alien that created space ghost. Not the other way around. No way! He's got his facts wrong. ;-)

The second video was one of the best easy-to-understand models of simple evolution I've ever seen, I think. However, the 13 generations in the first example of that video were not as clear as the many-thousand generation example, in my opinion. Unless you were paying close attention, the average "grayness" of the organism didn't seem to change a whole lot. It did, but I'm just saying as far as visually it wasn't as easy to notice. That wouldn't convince a creationist. The second example is very solid, however. Now, of course if one's head is in the sand (like most creationists), one will not see "1+2=3."

Thanks for sharing the videos!
