What’s Brazil’s Problem?

PZ recently did a post on camel sex. That led me to discover Google Insight. I was curious who is the most concerned about fundies, so I typed that in. I was expecting the U.S. to be at the top of the list, since we have the biggest problem. Nope. We’re a distant second:

Brazil? Brazil? It’s a predominantly Catholic country. That causes no end of problems, but they’re usually not as bad as those caused by the American-style Protestant fundies.

Anyone know what’s going on there? I thought maybe “fundie” was Portuguese for something else (maybe “camel sex”), but Google Translate says no.

Also on the Google Insight page was this table of most-frequent search terms:

Why would you search for fundies? There are too many around as it is.

I’m not sure what those numbers represent, but it looks like I have a large share of the mindset. When people want to know more about fundies, they come here!

    Fundie is apparently a misspelling of Fondue (it’s pronounced like that).

    Receita = Recipe
    Queijo = Cheese

    We do have fundie problems down here though.

    I thought that might be it. Every time I do a Google search for fundie, it gives me ads for fondue.

    Jabbing fundies with skewers and throwing them in boiling cheese might be fun, though.

    Long time reader from Brazil here. Yes, it is a common misspelling of fondue. And as far as I can tell there is no other thing that could be the issue here: even most English litterate people in Brazil wouldn’t know what a “fundie” is, even though we do have some around…

    It’s odd that the misspelling is limited to Brazil. Is “ue” pronounced as “ee” in Portuguese? Shouldn’t Portugal also be on the above list?

    I wish we only had “some” here. Up here, there are so many around they practically run the place (ruin the place is more like it).

    Spanish

    Click the “listen to this translation” button to hear the pronunciation. The portuguese link gives the “right” way to say it. People actually talk more like the spanish link.

    Portugal has 1/18th Brazil’s population, and Portugal probably has larger English literacy on average.
