A quick thought experiment would do wonders for christians and other religions that wish the state to advertise for their deity. Simply revise “God” with “Satan” in whatever church-state item you are dealing with. For example instead of “In God We Trust” change it to “In Satan We Trust”. Obviously, most christians would take offense. If the state can endorse your religion it can eventually endorse the opposite religion. In the case here it was watered down religion and even the christians don’t want that.

yeah,our state does dumb things sometimes.still,I’m thankful we are a blue state,nonetheless.it helps.
that said,I don’t see why he couldn’t have just shut up and did the prayer as requested.in order to be fair to everyone,if it might offend someone,then the big deal is….? this was a meeting for everyone,right? not church.he is still free to do what he wants there.
I would think that given his limited viewpoint,he should still have been happy to do it.it’s not like anyone was asking him to insert the name of allah,budda, or anyone else.

I’m embarrassed right now to live in NC. Still, in NC’s (very weak) defense, this is NOT unique to NC. In fact, I’d go so far as to say even the most liberal state in the Union wishes for invisible sky wizardry before many (most?) meetings and sessions.

That said, at least the P.C. Police are shining light onto why it shouldn’t happen in the first place!

Think of all the tax dollars we could save if we didn’t waste state working hours thinking magical pixie thoughts before ever meeting/session. Over the course of the year, it must be many hours!!

I would also take issue with an Islamic Priest performing a prayer to open a meeting for the government, just as I would a Taoist ceremony, Hindu prayer or anything similar because religion is meant to be kept separate from state. You can’t have freedom OF religion without freedom FROM religion.

Yeah, I started to add a caveat. Backing up your argument with someone they instinctually want to trust has helped me.

It’s generally not getting through to them because they just know that it’s got to be wrong somehow, but it does often have a stupefying effect. It’s something they don’t know how to respond to at all if they’ve never been exposed to it. And usually, if I’m referring to the Bible, I try to find lengthy quotes in context so there isn’t as much wiggle room.

Numbers 5 is a fun one- particularly if you refer them to a translation that uses the more obvious word ‘uterus’ instead of the euphemism ‘loin’ or ‘thigh’.

Apart from quoting the Bible (the parts they ignore, mostly), it’s the best way to get through to a fundie.

Nah – they just deny the legitimacy of the quote, and when you prove it to them, they fall back on, “He wasn’t a REAL Founding
Father!”
