Dog the Bounty Hunter is Offensive

Cartman as Dog.

I refuse to watch Dog the Bounty Hunter, because his behavior is offensive.

Everybody is in a tizzy right now, because Dog said “nigger” in a private phone call. Should he have used that word? Should his show be cancelled? I have no opinion on that, because I don’t have a dog in this fight (so to speak).

I’ve only seen his show once, and that was a while ago. Once was enough. Before he and his crew went out on their raid, they all got together and did some sort of bizarre group-hug/pray-a-thon. WTF?

First of all, if I want to see a bunch of guys grope-pray each other, I’ll watch whatever Ted Haggard’s next show will be. Second, is that even legal? Doesn’t this pray-datory behavior create a hostile work environment? What if he hires somebody who doesn’t want to participate? Is it a requirement of the job? Would he refuse to hire someone who doesn’t want to participate? It seems to me that he’s on thin legal ground.

It also makes for annoying television. I don’t want my entertainment interrupted by periodic bouts of superstition. But when I encounter an offensive TV show, I do the only logical thing: I refuse to watch it.

Compare that with what the Parents Television Council, the American Decency Association, and countless other fundie asshat organizations do when they’re offended: They try to get the shows cancelled.

One action is about personal responsibility. The other action is about controlling other people’s lives. One action is the hallmark of a free society. The other action is the hallmark of oppression.

Yeah, that show is terrible. I watched it a few times just so I’d understand the South Park send-up. It won’t be any big loss if it gets canceled, although I’d sort of hate to see him get singled out when so many Fox “News” pundits continue to escape consequences for their hateful statements.

  2. Ron Britton Says:

    Vjack:

That’s a very good point. How are Fox News and all of the other conservative pundits able to get away with everything they say? I’m guessing it’s because the population at large has finally recognized that the word Dog used is offensive, so it is no longer tolerated. However, a large part of the population agrees with the hate of Fox News. You need an overwhelming majority to be offended before there’s a public backlash.

  3. ParrotLover77 Says:

You know I can’t believe I’m supporting a fundie conservative family (he has a very proud framed picture of Bush in his office), but the man does do good work.

In response to the hostile work environment, for him it’s not a problem because he only employs relatives and they all seem to share his “born again” beliefs. As far as I know, there’s no law against BEING religious in the workplace, as long as you don’t discriminate employees based on religious grounds. There are many other non-camera’d employees of Da Kine that aren’t participating in the man grope prayer and they aren’t necessarily religious nor care.

Now if Dog fired somebody BECAUSE they refused to be in on the group hug grope prayer thing, then you’d definitely have an argument.

I may hate fundies, but Dog is one of the most “Christian” (based on what they are SUPPOSED to be like according to their literature) people I’ve seen on the teevee. He actually seems to live by the moral codes he preaches. And he’s always trying to help the criminals he catches turn straight. Hell, that was like Jesus’ main thing right? Blessed are the meek and all that? Rare for a fundie to care about anything but rich people!

Anyway, back to your original point. Annoying pointless prayer? Yes, indeedy. No argument there. But he doesn’t seem to force it on anybody (he’s just praying with his family, who are his coworkers — remember he has like 500 kids, fifty brothers, 200 ex-wives, and so on). Okay I’m exaggerating but his family is HUGE and contains even non-relatives he calls “brothers.” So let them get their prayer grope on. Free country! And we’re free to moon the teevee when he does it.

Note: my opinion will immediately change if he ever not-hired or fired a non-Christian solely or partly based on religious grounds. But unless he does that, he can go pray up a storm with his family. Just don’t force it. That’s all we’re asking for, right? Just not being forced upon one’s religion?

  4. ParrotLover77 Says:

Oh yea, the n-word comment I haven’t read about. I’m not a huge fan and rarely read “tabloid” news or really any news following teevee or movee stars, but I’ve caught the dog show at 2am many times when I can’t sleep. Racial issues are a whole nother issue for a whole nother website/blog, but if he’s espousing racist comments on the air (or in public), he’s got to realize there will be consequences. I’m not defending that, just defending his religious (and my unreligious) freedoms.

  5. Ron Britton Says:

    Parrotlover:

On the matter of “the N-word”, you’ll notice that I mostly used that as a jumping off point to mention what I find offensive. I think the people who have been discriminated against using that word and other tactics are the best qualified to determine whether Dog stepped over the line. I’ll leave that matter to them.

I don’t watch his show, because I find all of that religion to be annoying. I was hardly attacking the man. He’s free to live his life how he wants. I was just raising the issue of whether the presence of that much praying and the implied mandatory participation was defensible legally, considering the workplace non-discrimination laws. I don’t think there are any laws against nepotism, so if he is able to populate his workforce with fundie relatives, then he’s free and clear.

  6. Dave Zirkle Says:

It looks to me like the guy is just another stupid racist fundie that made it big by getting on camera.

I really don’t think a bounty hunter qualifies as a respectable job. It means you hunt people for money. If this Dog person is so worried about those he hunts why doesn’t he do it for free? If he is so Christian it seems the right thing, by his Christian tenets, would be to help the unfortunate individuals on a pro bono basis.

The racial slur just adds to the evidence that he is a typical ass-clown hypocrite making money off of a two thousand year old myth. Kind of like most preachers.

This is kind of off topic but I really like this blog. First time I have read it and I enjoyed my time reading. It was well spent. Thank you.

  7. Ron Britton Says:

    Dave:

I think bounty hunting is more respectable than some jobs (e.g., priest, minister, preacher, Sylvia Browne). Also, if you can get somebody to pay you for what you would otherwise do for free, what’s wrong with that?

I do think that at least some of Dog’s act is just that: an act. He has a TV show and wants to portray himself a certain way. He also has a certain agenda (spreading the word of Jeebus), and he’s using the show to that end.

Most of the people I know are non-racists, and they would never use racial slurs. It makes you wonder what type of person so freely uses such language, even if it is in a moment of anger.

P.S. Glad you like the blog. Tell your friends!

  8. David Spates Says:

That is messed up how Dog was going off like that with the n word. I put up a video showing how I feel about the whole thing. It has some extra footage of this bull…._and the story of how he became a bounty hunter. The video is called “ Dog Duane Chapman Bounty Hunter “N” Word – Talking With Dave #4”. It’s at
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=4oC8OgFkd38
My videos are kind of…. Different.

  9. ericsan Says:

That’s how we’ve become a banana republic… The government funnels billions to Blackwater, a private mercenary army 20,000 strong, with its own aircraft and tanks, wages an illegal war, exposes covert agents out of spite, and all we care about is some shithead exposing his idiocy or some dumb old cunt exposing her wrinkly nipple on television. We’re fucked.

  10. ParrotLover77 Says:

Ron – agree with your reply 100%… But it brings up a question I’ve always had… Why do fundies breed so damn much? And the follow-up question, how can we slow them down so the entire world isn’t fighting over water and potatoes 50 years from now while most of the world starves to death from massive overpopulation? Fundies don’t do a lot of planning for their beloved next generation of snotballs.

  11. Ron Britton Says:

    ParrotLover:

The breeding thing bothers me, too. They preach abstinence before marriage, so I guess the rule is that once you’re married, you have to make up for lost time.

As far as them overpopulating but not being worried about the consequences, I keep hearing a lot of them say that “God will provide!”

  15. Ron Britton Says:

And guess who I’m being for halloween.

It’s what you are the rest of the year that concerns me.

  16. J.R. "Bob" Dobbs Says:

And guess who I’m being for halloween.

From your attempts to insult us with accusing us sucking dicks, I have determined you’re trying to call attention away from your homosexuality. So you will dress up as Dog’s bitch and attempt to live up to every fanboy’s dream.

  17. Andrea Says:

I don’t mind dog the bounty hunter but who I don’t like is his woman. She mocks people all of the time and I find that annoying. She thinks that she’s so great and wonderful, but, she’s pretty disgusting. I mean all you have to do is take a good look at her chest and you’ve seen everything. I don’t like how they just break into somebody’s house and violently grab somebody. I don’t like the swearing all of the time either, that I think they could do without.

  18. Kevin Says:

Tack-O-Rama,what happened to A&E.As for white (or otherwise) trash hitting rock bottom, finding their version of redemption, then becoming sanctimonious it’s nothing new.A lot of imprisoned serial killers have found Jesus. As for his dropping the “N bomb” is it surprising?
Seems like the worst examples of one race are most critical of other ones.Besides, she looks like Nancy Spungen on steroids, and he speaks,or rather bellows, for himself.

  19. Chris Says:

Dog The Bounty Hunter is a fantastic show. When it was taken off the air because Dog said the “N-Word” in a private phone conversation, A&E saw a major drop in viewers. I personally believe there isn’t anything wrong with the “N-Word”, because we have a little thing called the 1st Amendment, which means you can say anything you want.

Secondly, the reason Dog and his whole family prays, is simply because they are religious. I’m not religious, and I hate everything related to any religion, but I don’t see a problem with it, because that’s just what they happen to do.

No one should be trashing Dog or his show, because he is responsible for bringing thousands and thousands of fugitives to justice. Some people call him controversial. I call him effective. He’ll get the job done by any means necessary. And the law actually states that Bounty Hunters can do what police can’t do, which is breaking and entering into houses without a warrant, using excessive force, and even the use of nasty language. Plus, Bounty Hunters can catch a fugitive in all 50 states, unlike police, where they are divided by districts.

So I think everyone should shut the fuck up and let the poor man do his job. Dog and his show is the reason why I’m getting into the Bounty Hunting profession myself. I’ll be doing everything he does, except for the whole praying thing. Oh, and unlike Dog, I would carry numerous firearms.

Lastly, South Park wasn’t really poking fun at the show. They were just doing what they do best, which is put stuff from real life into the show and make it hilarious. Sure, Cartman’s assistants all seemed stupid and stuff, but that’s just the way Matt Stone and Trey Parker do the show. Well, I guess they do “poke fun” at Dog The Bounty Hunter, but not in a way like it’s a bad show or anything.

So to all of you who think the show is terrible, hate Dog, and all of that other “anti” shit, FUCK YOU ALL. You guys should just all go to Mexico and get your heads ripped off by the Drug Cartel, or go to Gaza and get picked off by the Hamas.

For those of you who support Dog and the show, I applaud you. You are true Americans.

  20. J.R. "Bob" Dobbs Says:

That last comment reminds me of Rorschach defending The Comedian.

  21. Parrotlover77 Says:

    tl;dr

Chris – you could have stopped at “…anything wrong with the ‘N-Word’…”

Your true colors showed right there, no matter what else you might have had to say.

  22. k10w3 Says:

Dog’s use of the N-word, isn’t the big story here. It’s how and why this recording ever saw the light of day that I find fascinating!

The son, an ex-felon still on parole, is dating someone of color, and Dog (loving father) demands his son break up with the girlfriend (i.e., severe is chance for joy/love…I suppose since Dog himself has had many romantic relationships, he feels his kid should just dispose of this one that could end his/family’s lucrative television opportunity) because the relationship is a threat to his livelihood, since he KNOWS he habitually uses the N-word, and SHE might expose that to the people who sign his paycheck and/or his adoring television-viewing fans. Gee, Dog…don’t try to CHANGE your offensive behavior…because CHANGING what is WRONG with a person (what Jesus tells you to do — and what YOU presumably as a bounty hunter think the end result of your labors will be for the “bad guys” you hunt down), just dispose of any opportunity that you’re offensive behavior will expose you as a hypocrite.

Obviously, Tucker, the son, saw this hypocrisy, also, and knowing exactly how Daddy would react, taped the conversation he knew was coming…and then in true “like father, like son” fashion, sold the tape FOR A LOT OF MONEY. (It’s all about money–always has been, always will be, Jesus/Christianity is just a marketing tool).

Well, in an interesting little turn of events, Tucker violated his parole, and is now back in jail (for “associating with known felons, failing a drug test and walking away from a rehab facility)….and Dog’s show is back in production!

A good, Bible-believing father, would see that his house is not in order, and the spotlight on their life needs to be turned off, he needs to get a HUMBLE job, and “focus on his family” — not on their income! “The Lord” is telling this family something…they’re arrogant, they’re greedy, they’re proud, they’re, most of all, self-righteous, and that’s not was the J-man was all about, so that “group-hug/pray-a-thon” is just theatrics.

I will never understand the viewing public.

  23. Parrotlover77 Says:

Why is this post generating so many drive-bys?

Most of my traffic comes from search engines. When I write on a topic I don’t normally cover, it brings in a different crowd.

  25. Brian Says:

I just want to point out a glaring bit of hypocrisy is what Chris said a few days ago. First he said:

I personally believe there isn’t anything wrong with the “N-Word”, because we have a little thing called the 1st Amendment, which means you can say anything you want.

Parrotlover already nailed him on the “N-word” thing, and rightly so. But here’s what followed:

No one should be trashing Dog or his show, because he is responsible for bringing thousands and thousands of fugitives to justice.

I suppose the First Amendment only applies to the opinions that Chris agrees with. I hope he doesn’t go around representing atheism very much. He sounds just like a fundie.

LMAO! So anyone that prays is a fundie. You watched it ONE time, suurree you do know what you are talking about. LOL!

If you would had noticed, that is FAMILY that is working with him. They probably believe the same. He offers prayer, because that is what he believes in. I have never seen him force someone pray.

Also, if you would get the stick out of your ass and actually watch it…you would see that he is in the United States…Um, you know the land of the free. Freedom of religion and all that jazz.

Amazing how closed minded you really are. LOL!

Go and push the leftie movement more. Scream and yell “OMFG I DONT LIKE THIS!!! GET IT AWAY!! DON’T SAY ANYTHING I DON’T LIKE!!! OMG IM SOOO OFFENDED!!!! *KRI KRI KRI*”

I don’t even watch the show, but I watched it enough to know that you don’t know wtf you are talking about!!! Hahaha!

Thanks for the laugh! Keep talking out of your ass, I’m sure Michael Moore loves you.

Either way, maybe you should spend less time watching men grope each other on TV and more time learning to read.

  33. autumn Says:

Hey everyone – I stopped reading these blogs about half way through they started to get really rediculous!!!! I love watching DOG and the Chapman Family I find them very entertaining!!!But what I find most entertaining is that most of the negative blogs on dog speak in detail about the show and the parts that annoy you and how negative or astupid is. If you really find it so bad or annoying why dont you not watch it and go watch some other truly annoying reality series show, there are about a million on every channell.as for the praying or what I like to call”christian criticism” christians are not perfect because of there beliefs they do there best to obey god and teach there family morals as well as others.og does the best he can to exhibit his faith along with his family and that isnt something easy to do on camera while bounty hunting !!!I think most fans would agree that the are just trying to council troubled souls in hopes that they find there way back to normal life because if you pay attention to most off the car rides most of these people have fallen way off of the beaten path. These people are mostly hardened criminals and major addicts and dealers do you want them running the streets of your town. I think most would make that family heroes and welcome them if the did what they do in Haiwaii and Colorado in there states or towns. Also someone made a comment about Beth talking shit, have you ever heard what the people are screaming at her ?Get real ,any real woman would loose there composure noone is perfect and they are allowing us to see insu=ide there lives dont be soo critical!P.S. I love when beth puts dog in his plae but then makes him feel like a man again !tTake notes ladies cuz thats how to keep your man!!!!!!and get your way lol

You don’t respect us enough to spell check, yet you expect us to respect your opinion?

  36. Barbara Says:

Ok, the misspelled “grammer” I can live with, as well as the dropped apostrophe in “isnt”. Perhaps her cult is simply free from apostrophe, since it’s also missing in “its”, and “dont”.

    But “bcker” ?!

What the hell is that? Becker? Bob Barker?

Oh, wait, it’s bicker. Isn’t it?

This game is fun, please post more!

  37. Jeff Eyges Says:

You know, there is a point in there. It’s something I go back and forth with a lot lately. On the one hand, I don’t think we can survive much longer unless we dispense with religion, except, perhaps, for an all-purpose mysticism. On the other, it may be that we have to hold onto conservative theologies in order to control much of the underclass. How many times have we heard a Christian say, “If I didn’t fear God and eternal damnation, I’d be out murdering, raping, stealing… “?

Of course, as a liberal, I think the answer is to spend more money on social services, particularly education, and, hopefully, to raise the general intellectual level. In the meantime, we may be stuck with religion.

  38. Ron Britton Says:

    Jeff:

They’re not capable of sophisticated thinking. The reason you wallop your five year old when he tries to run out into traffic is because he isn’t capable of thinking about consequences at a higher level than just punishment.

    We need religion.

  39. Jeff Eyges Says:

Yeah. I wouldn’t hit a child – I’d watch him to make sure he didn’t run out into traffic – but you’re right, they’re operating at an extremely primitive cognitive level. They aren’t capable of thinking beyond reward and punishment, and they don’t think anyone else is, either. They think it’s just the way reality works – and there’s no way to explain it to them.

  40. Gordon Frank Says:

Let me get this straight. You enjoy Southpark yet you find Dog offensive. Is that what you are telling us?

    Interesting.

  41. J.R. "Bob" Dobbs Says:

Not so much, as South Park is meant as satire whilst Dog is lowest common denominator reality trash.

  42. sue blue Says:

I’m always torn between pity and contempt for these people who show up and ardently defend TV show characters of whom they have absolutely no first-hand knowledge at all. Apparently these characters can get away with any kind of nasty, racist, foul-mouthed trash and violence as long as they are (or pretend to be)”christian” – closing their eyes and invoking the name of a 2,000 years-dead Jew just before they take someone down. I’m proud to say I’ve never watched an episode of “Dog”, but I’ve seen the ads for it. Is it just me, or does it seem strange to anyone else here that these actors can claim to be “christian” and yet curse like sailors and dress like hookers? Don’t dirty words make Baby Jesus cry anymore like they did when I was growing up?
And it’s really too bad that Autumn was too tired to punctuate or spell-check her post but not too tired to type and post it.
