Fight the Commies—Go to Church!
[I’m having trouble finding the time to continue Darwin Was Wrong. Hopefully this weekend! In the meantime, here is a quickie I wrote a couple of months ago and then forgot to run.]
I found the above image on Miss Retro Modern’s Flickr stream. The ad above comes from Canada, which just proves that the U.S. doesn’t have a monopoly on Christian fear-mongering. The ad was published in 1955, the glory days of anti-communism, anti-atheism, and the Cold War.
This ad is so scary. The church is almost empty! The commies will win for sure! We’re endangering our Way Of Life by cheating God out of his weekly fix.
I bet you materialistic atheists out there didn’t know you were enslaving six out of every twenty people living!
(Why didn’t they just say three out of ten? Can’t they find the least common denominator? Maybe they should spend less time in church and more time in school.)

This one is creepy. I had some documents from a labor union from about the same period of time. I sold them on Ebay. The documents contained a clause that the applicant must sign stating “I am not, nor have I ever been…” The buyer stated that he would frame the application and hang it in the union hall as an example of something that they would never do again.

The ‘communist’ gov’mints mentioned are about as communistic as the US is democratic. Heinlein mentioned in one of his books that there is nothing really wrong with communist as it requires the same intelligent, active citizen to make either real communism or real democracy work.
Additionally if you really look thru the buybull you can easily read communism as a basic part of christianity. The gov’mints mentions where NOT communism – they were CALLED communism. What they were and are are totalitarianism. They hated religion and skeptx alike. the skeptx could not be thought controlled and the religious had their minds so wrapped up in jepus (or who ever) that they could not be controlled either. And since the religious have shown they are just as capable of totalitarian behavior, the ‘atheist’ label is BS, as they know.

Hey you should do a post about what Pat Robinson said regarding the quake in Haiti…It was sort of sickening.

Mary K.:
You’re right. It’s one of the purest examples of fundie moronitude. It’s right up there with Jerry Falwell blaming 9/11 on the feminists and pagans.
I don’t have as much time for blogging now as I’ve had in the last few months. A zillion other blogs have covered his comment, so I won’t be doing an article myself.

I think they got that 30% figure from the Bureau of Pulling Scary Lies out of Thin Air, we’re not even at that now, are we? And they used 6 of 20 because 6 sounds scarier than 3, pretty sure that technique is in the Propagandist’s Handbook.
Being called a godless commie these days is bad enough, but back then, lives and careers were routinely destroyed over such allegations. I guess we can be thankful for that, yes?

Damn right! Where’s my share of the slaves?

You know, I’ve wondered about this sort of thing, myself. I’m told I’m an atheist because I want to lead a life of sin and not be held “accountable”. Where is all of this unbridled hedonistic pleasure I’m supposed to be experiencing? Was there a memo I didn’t get? Did I miss a meeting?

I’m pretty sure this is a metric conversion error.
I love the subtext that Christian countries are easy targets because of their complacency. I guess religion really is the opiate of the masses.

I’ve often wondered the same. Damn! If I’m just “making up” my morals, why did I have to make up such a goody goody set of morals!?

Well that is one subject they never carried in my history class. I new about the japs. That was embarrassing enough but this… Sigh
Being Canadian I collectively hang my head in shame.
Please…. We need to believe we were sold that bill of that crap from you guys.. okay.
